Nandita Das didn’t know how to react, “It took some time to sink in that the French wanted to honour me” she said.

They have also asked her to choose the French personality she wants to receive the award from. “And there’re so many people I want to get the award from. To me, Paris is like Kolkata, the cultural nerve-center of the country”, said Nandita.

Nandita has just completed shooting her first directorial venture In Such Times which focuses on issues of everyday life. “For the past year, I’ve been completely consumed by my film,” She says,” I’m enjoying the whole process of creating a film.

For now, the movie has been named ‘Such Times’. But the hunt for a Hindi title is on. The film is in conversational language with a mix of Hindi, English , Urdu etc. It features a very eminent ensemble cast with the likes of Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval, Raghubir Yadav etc.

Nandita wraps up music and editing by April. She also plans to send her movie to the festivals, which is the safest route for a non-formulaic film. The only other recipient of the French award this year has been Shahrukh Khan early this year.
