After a strike between Hindi-language movie producers and multiplex owners, Indians are returning to the cinema. But some new Bollywood releases are being anticipated for a different reason -- nudity.

"New York," charting the reactions of international students in the city on September 11, 2001, opened on Friday and features actor John Abraham in the nude. Abraham's bare buttocks were seen -- briefly -- in last year's "Dostana".

Neil Nitin Mukesh, meanwhile, has stripped for the forthcoming "Jail," as has Maradona Rebello in "Pankh," causing tongues to wag, particularly in the newspaper gossip columns, despite the scenes being tame by Hollywood standards.

Add to that kissing scenes between Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor in "Kambakht Ishq" and Deepika Padukone with Saif Ali Khan in "Love Aaj Kal" and Bollywood would appear to have become as steamy as the monsoon humidity.

But actors and filmmakers say that more graphic "lip-lock" scenes are simply a reflection of changing times, just as Bollywood is branching out from traditional "masala" song and dance movies to tackle more contemporary themes.

"I am a professional actor and I will do anything that a role demands," Kapoor said last week. "If there is a need for it and the script demands it, then you have to do it."

On-screen kissing in Bollywood was common until the 1940s but after Indian independence from Britain in 1947, the censor board set itself up as the new nation's moral guardian against corrupt Western influences.

In 1952, the Cinematograph Act was passed, banning so-called "indecency," including celluloid sex and nudity, purportedly to promote a greater sense of Indian national identity.

As a result, the nearest a hero could come to a heroine was an embrace.

And when it came to actual love-making, either the lights went off on screen or the shot cut to images of two bees or two flowers touching.

Veteran producer-director Mahesh Bhatt was one of the first Indian filmmakers to experiment with bolder kissing scenes in the thriller "Murder," which was one of the biggest hits of 2004.

The movie about an extra-marital affair saw Mallika Sherawat and Emraan Hashmi in a number of passionate clinches. Other films followed suit and were given an "A" certificate -- for over 18s only.

But in the last couple of years, the censors appeared to have softened, giving more films with kissing in them "U/A" -- or parental guidance -- certificates.

"We all have to change with the times," said Bhatt. "In a globalised world, you cannot hold your thoughts.

"'Murder' was about promiscuity and an extra-marital affair. It would have got an 'A' certificate anyway.

"I feel sexuality in a film will have problems (with the censors) but what we see today is many candyfloss films having some lip-lock scenes and they are getting a 'U/A' certificate. It's definitely a change."

Padukone agreed.

"If there is a kissing scene in the film then you have to show it because it is important to the script of the film. We cannot show two flowers touching each other like we used to do earlier in our films," she said.

But Vinayak Azad, regional officer at the Central Board of Film Certification, denied the censors have become more relaxed in what is still a deeply conservative society.

"I won't say that we have become more liberal but we are keeping more abreast with the times," he said.

"We have given more 'A' certificates to big, hit films like 'Race' and 'Life in a Metro' in the last two years, but then we also give 'U/A' certificates to many of them.

"We do that because we leave it up to the parents whether they want their children to watch those films or not."

Recent reports claim that Salman Khan has refused to watch Katrina's latest film New York.

There are a variety of assumptions regarding why Salman has taken such a decision. First, some say that Salman can't stand to see Katrina being intimate with another man, even if it is just for a movie, and New York has a kiss and some intimate scene between Katrina and John Abraham.

Speaking of John Abraham, the other possible reason why Salman has refused to watch New York is perhaps John Abraham. The two Bollywood hunks have had a long history of rivalry and it is possible that Salman doesn't want to watch a film with his arch-enemy in it.

What makes this decision more hurtful for Katrina is that while Salman was ominously missing from the celebrations, John's girlfriend Bipasha Basu reportedly took time off from her shooting in Goa to be with John for the premiere of this film.

Moreover, Katrina says she is astounded at her performance as she never believed any director could extract such a performance from her. She said she was deeply moved by the film and in fact, had tears in her eyes after it was over.

It is unfortunate that Salman has refused to be part of Katrina's special moment.

New York on th verge of turning hit

If the weekend response to Yash Raj Films' latest release New York is anything to go by, the film is all set to enjoy at least a HIT status for itself at the box office. This Kabir Khan directed film has taken an extremely good opening at the box office and is seeing a rapid growth in positive word of mouth with every passing show. The film has done wonders at the box office and has clearly seen one of the most positive box office responses of the year 2009 so far.

By the time first show of the film came to it's conclusion on Friday, picture was crystal clear that this John Abraham, Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Irrfan Khan starrer was en route to the winning post. The opening shows occupancy ranged from 60%-70% which was quite positive considering the fact that with an exception of big star cast films, majority of movies start warming up only by evening shows. However, the trend was different in case of New York which got into third gear from the time advance booking counters opened and by the time it was evening, word had spread that New York was a quality film waiting to be lapped up.


No wonder, the evening and night shows were houseful all over and the scene only got better over the remainder of the weekend. After ages, one got to see Houseful signs at multiplexes, something that was missing ever since the year had begun. With the film managing to take the best start of the year so far, it is all set to surpass the opening of Chandni Chowk To China
and Delhi-6. Not that these two films did much wonders at the box office but on absolute terms, while Chandni Chowk To China had boasted of 26 crores in the first week, Delhi-6 had netted a mere 22 crores. In this regard, New York is clearly expected to surpass these figures.

Even if that doesn't happen and New York falls short of a couple of crores or so, it would still be a remarkable feat since the film hasn't seen a huge opening like the aforementioned films. The point is, this Kabir Khan directed film has finally broken the bad spell at the box office and brought cheers back on the faces of producers, exhibitors, distributors and of course the audiences.

As for the actors, whether it is John Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh or Katrina Kaif - each of them has come up with his/her career best performance in the film; something that is reflected in the manner in which audiences as well as critics are appreciating the film. In a sensitive film that keeps it's drama and thrills intact, it was a thin rope that the actors had to walk. However, they have done exceedingly well in surpassing the expectations even when a powerhouse performer Irrfan Khan, who can seldom put a foot wrong, was amidst them.

The other release of the week, Runway, has been a miserable disaster though and it won't be surprising if theaters screening the film (in the limited prints that it has arrived) replace it with New York as the week begins. This writer just had two people for company in the entire auditorium on the first day of the film's screening which clearly tells the tale. Starring one film old Amarjeet along with Tulip Joshi, the film is a terrible affair and only adds on to the long list of insignificant non-performers of the year so far.

"Both Kareena and Katrina are really good but who is the better among them depends on their roles in the films. Otherwise, both of them have sexy bodies and are absolutely wonderful actresses," said Akshay when asked to choose his favourite of the two.

Akshay has done four films with Katrina including Namastey London and Singh Is Kinng, while he has worked with Kareena in five that include hits Ajnabee and Aitraaz. The two are set to scorch the screen once again in their upcoming action-cum-romantic drama Kambakkht Ishq, which releases this coming Friday.

"In Kambakkht Ishq, Kareena has performed very well. Her character required to answer back at me and be strong and she has portrayed it in a powerful, yet lovable way. On the other hand, even Katrina was really good in Namastey London. So it's not really about my choice... it all depends on their roles," the actor said.
